REVIEW and GIVEAWAY: The Tale of Mally Biddle

mally biddle

The Tale of Mally Biddle by M.L. LeGette When Mally Biddle agreed to spy upon the King of Lenzar and his overbearing knights she knew she was heading into danger. She didn't know she'd find a family unlike any other. Posing as a servant in Bosc Castle, Mally serves tea and tends fires for the most dangerous men in the kingdom.

Her goal is to learn the truth of what happened sixteen years ago, when the infant princess met her death ... a death that is surrounded by more questions than answers.

Along her search for the truth, Mally meets the energized Lita Stump, the strict and matriarchal Meriyal Boyd, and the opinionated Archibald Diggleby. Then of course there are the knights: Leon Gibbs who is slicker than a greased hog, Adrian Bayard, hot tempered and violent, and the worst of the lot: Sir Illius Molick, Captain of the Knights. And then there is Maud, a mysterious woman who just might know everything...

REVIEW: The Tale of Mally Biddle

Mally Biddle is a strong young heroine who rises to many challenges, displays courage, and makes up her own mind as she learns to be a servant/spy in the castle of King Lenzar.  This book has a lot of things going for it… there’s plenty of mystery, characters, and a fabulous setting.

Mally is lamenting her bad luck in being  I charge of a herd of goats when an opportunity presents itself… she’s offered a “job” spying on the King and his Knights by Rebels in her Kingdom.  Being a brave girl, and wanting to help the rebels and stick it to the knights, (everyone hates knights in this story, they are the worst!) she agrees.

When she gets to the castle she has to learn to be a bit submissive, which does nto come natural to her.  She’s an outspoken girl and has no experience serving others.  But she makes friends easily, and draws the attention of some bad people.  She endures some pretty challenging attacks (but by whom is the mystery) and come out the other end more powerful and more mature.

This is a great read for younger young adults, perhaps 12-14.  The writing isn’t watered down, so it’s good for advanced readers.  Also, the plot, while interesting, is not fast-paced, so this is a good book for readers who enjoy detailed descriptions.

I highly recommend this book as it’s clean and presents a lot of positive messages for young people.

His mother tried to keep him safe; a low profile, a constant move on the horizon, a week's pay always stashed away. She tried to instill in him that he was special somehow, though would never elaborate. He never felt different. He was so completely normal and vanilla that he wondered if it had all been in her head. Never stop running… Now he's semi-settled into a big town. The college is huge and easy to blend into. It's been three months since he had to move because 'Biloxi', as he calls the man who killed his mother, found him once more. Then Marley, an eighteen year old girl who is as infuriating as she is blissfully ignorant of her gorgeousness, smashes into his car with hers. Then smashes into his life as he realizes that whatever it is he has that Biloxi wants, she has it, too. And now, they're after them both.

REVIEW
First, thank you to Xpresso Tours and Samantha Summers for providing me with a review copy of both books, First Light and As you Were.

This review is for both books on the Project five-Fifteen series.

Ok, well, book three cannot come out fast enough for me.  This was fun.  I admit, sometimes when I look at my review schedule I think I can pick out the books that make me worry if I will like them or not.  I wasn’t sure about this series at first, mostly because I don’t care for the covers, but as soon as I started reading First Light, I knew I was wrong.  I loved both books but especially book two.

Book one is a romance, it’s got some mystery and some thrilling moments, but it’s not fast-paced enough to be a real thriller.  That doesn’t change the way I feel about it, it was great to meet Ronnie and Kalen, as well as the other boys – especially Ace and Denver. I enjoyed pretty much all of it, although I do admit to wishing for more Kalen when he was missing from the story.  And honestly, that wasn’t much.  He blew Ronnie Rose off and she took it like a champ – she partied!  LOL...take that, Kalen who?
And nothing drives a brooding I'm-no-good-for-you bad boy crazier than  a girl who gets on with her life, so he promptly returned, and actually, we know he was creeping, he never left in the first place.
And oh, the boys.  I love how she calls them the boys, well even Kalen calls them the boys, and he’s one of them!  They have a murky past, they know a lot of cool stuff, they can speak different languages… which all adds up to hot mystery guys with a dark side!  Who could resist?

I enjoyed Kalen’s flashbacks in the first book, but I really, really loved them in the second.  Holy crap, did they ever reveal what those boys went through.  Also, I felt the draw to Ace in book one, just as Ronnie did, but in book two, Ace was a major player and if he dies in the third book, I’ll be heartbroken.

I read another review that asked why Ronnie got so attached to the boys so fast and I think the reason was Ace.  He’s not like the other boys, he’s younger and his past is not as gruesome, although his training is exactly the same and he’s no chicken-shit.

But Ace was looking for something in Ronnie in book one, a friend, a sister, maybe even a girlfriend.  Ace desperately wanted female company, and not in a creepy way.  I think most of the boys felt this way – they were raised without women, so when Ronnie shows up with her girly ways, they loved her. (Most of them!)

Book two IS a real thriller from start to finish.  The pacing is lightning fast, Ronnie is in danger almost the whole time, and Kalen is so torn between what “they” are manipulating him to do and what Ronnie wants him to do that it gives the book a Jason Bourne feel to it, but with teenagers.

In book two we learn a lot more about Ace and he and Ronnie become close, confusing the poor kid to the point that he starts to have feelings for Ronnie.  And he’s so needy, for being what he is, that I almost wanted Ronnie to choose him just to make him happy!  Ace is a very well-developed character.

We also learn so much about the boys’ past and why they act the way they do.  And there is an unexpected addition to the “team” when another boy, not one from book one, shows up and freaks Kalen out.  You see, not all the boys are “good”.

I love thrillers but I really love YA thrillers because it takes a special character to pull off that kind of twisty pacing and keep it believable.  This is why a well-developed past is essential and Summers definitely hit that nail on the head in this series.

Kalen fits the bill for the action hero, but Ronnie Rose is no wallflower either.  In fact, she slips into the role of Mrs. Jason Bourne with ease and her courage is on display time and time again.  She takes real hits, bloody, bone cracking hits, and she gets back up and fights again.

Ronnie Rose is strong and likable, so her and Kalen together are like the thriller dream team.  I will definitely be waiting anxiously for book three, Becoming.

Four stars for First Light and five stars for As You Were

Shadow Chaser - The story behind the title

Why the title, Shadow Chaser?

There are many stories in the New Testament of Jesus confronting not only the religious leaders of the day, but the powerful forces at work in the spiritual world.  Forces that the book of Ephesians calls “the powers of this dark world”, the “spiritual forces of evil”. (Eph 6:12)  There is a reality here that we have to come to terms with.  Jesus came across many, many people who were sick.  And on certain occasions, he recognized that the illness was due to a spiritual force attacking someone.  This isn’t always the case with sickness, by the way…but when we read the Scriptures we have to acknowledge that Jesus, at least, believed these powers were real, and harmful to people.  There were times where he healed someone from a sickness; there were other times where he told a demon bringing the malady on to leave.  Both listened to his commands.

There is an old Hebrew word – “Machala” – it is the word that means “sickness”.  In Shadow Chaser, I’ve personified that word.  M’chala shows up as a fallen angel of sorts…the angel capable of causing illness in a human being.  He moves differently…like a shadow, a wisp of smoke, so that even some of the fallen are afraid.  He plays by a different set of rules.

And he’s after Jonah, his family, and his friends.

How do you fight something you can barely see?  What can Jonah, Eliza, and Jeremiah possibly do to combat M’chala – the fallen angel of sickness?

And how do you trust God in the middle of it all?
